A Song by Phuljung: "Kind Lama"

“Kind Lama” By Phuljung from HPeaks on Vimeo.

High Peaks Pure Earth has translated a song by detained Amdo singer Phuljung called “Kind Lama”, taken from his fifth album. Titled “Our Heavy Responsibility”, the album is made up of 13 songs and was released in May this year. According to this report by Radio Free Asia from August 21, 2012:

Amchok Phuljung was taken into custody on August 3 at around 4:00 p.m. in Barkham county in Sichuan’s Ngaba (in Chinese, Aba) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, a resident of the area told RFA, speaking on condition of anonymity. “He had been hiding in the hills to escape the police for about two to three months,” the source said.

The song “Kind Lama” is sung in three distinct parts. The first part talks about the Dalai Lama as the supreme head of Tibetan people and expresses the strong desire to see him. The Dalai Lama is referred to in the song as Yeshe Norbu, meaning wish-fulfilling jewel.
The second part of the song makes explicit reference to the elected exile leader Lobsang Sangay and cites him as the one to go to to speak about the suffering of the Tibetan people. The roaring lion in the video during this part is a visual pun as “Sangay” (Senge: སེང་གེ) means “lion”.
The third part talks about Tibetan people being not just sincere but also urges Tibetans to speak pure Tibetan and remain united.
Other videos by Phuljung from this album can be found on YouTube and on Youku.

Below are the translated lyrics to “Kind Lama”:

“Kind Lama”
By Phuljung

Kind Lama
The kind Lama is Yeshe Norbu
Kind Lama
The kind Lama is Yeshe Norbu
Sitting on the golden throne
He is the protector of the Tibetan people
Let’s go and see Yeshe Norbu
He is the protector of the Tibetan people
Let’s go and see Yeshe Norbu

Kind leader
The leader is Lobsang Sangay
Kind leader
The leader is Lobsang Sangay
Sitting on the silver throne
He is the leader of Tibet
Let’s go and tell him the joys and sorrows of Tibetan people
He is the leader of Tibet
Let’s go and tell him the joys and sorrows of Tibetan people

Kind people
The kind people are people of sincere character
Kind people
The kind people are people of sincere character
They are the Tibetan people
Speaking the pure Father tongue
They are the kind people
Let’s pledge our unity by joining hands
They are the kind people
Let’s pledge our unity by joining hands
