A Song by Dolma Kyap: “Homeland"

As a follow-up to the music video for “Gangchenpa”, High Peaks Pure Earth has translated another modern classic Tibetan song by Dolma Kyap called “Homeland” (Phayul) from 2009.

2013 03 27 DolmaKyap

As previously noted, Dolma Kyap is a popular and well-respected singer from Amdo, known for his strong voice and integrity. In 2009, Dolma Kyap released an album titled “Tsampa Homeland”, recorded entirely in Tibetan (although note that a Chinese language version of Gangchenpa exists also).
The album  contained both the songs “Homeland” and also “Gangchenpa”. In contrast to “Gangchenpa”, “Homeland” is a more melancholic song with the themes of separation presented against the backdrop of Tibet’s nature.
This is the eighteenth music video translated by High Peaks Pure Earth since the song series started in November 2012. Be sure to go back and watch our other videos using this link: http://highpeakspureearth.com/category/music-from-tibet/ We’ll be back next week with another music video from Tibet.
Below are the subtitled music video and translated lyrics of “Homeland” by Dolma Kyap:

“Homeland”
By Dolma Kyap
Lyrics: Menla Kyap
Composition: Dolma Kyap

Eternal snow mountains
Wings soaring over the high land
Whose dream is being carried away
What is left behind
Whose tiny shoes are consumed by the wind
Remembering one’s home
Oh! Snow mountains!
Snow mountains, the first sight seen at birth
Snow mountains, touch the heart in old age

Oh! Homeland!
Homeland!
The distant snow turned into rain
The rain water swirling in the eyes
The heart remembers parents and relatives
Thoughts of returning home

Blue icy water
Love scattered over the land
Whose aspiration is carried away
What is left behind
Whose love is frozen by the ice
And the throat is choked
Oh! Ice water!
Ice water, touches the mouth at birth
Ice water stirs the memory in old age

Oh! Homeland!
Homeland!
The distant snow turned into rain
The rain water swirling in the eyes
The heart remembers parents and relatives
Thoughts of returning home

Homeland!
The distant snow turned into rain
The rain water swirling in the eyes
The heart remembers parents and relatives
Thoughts of returning home

  3. I recently became familiar with the high peak pure earth website after one of the member was interviewed by VOA news. I started visiting the site and read some of great poetry’s, articles and stories. It is so powerful. It left strong inexpressible mark inside me. I thankfully appreciate the hard work. However, I have a one personal question. All these beautiful songs are translated in many different languages and most of them are related to politics and Tibet. Many singers were arrested in past and if we share their songs with obvious detail and openly wouldn’t it lead the composer/singers in danger? It is just an personal thought.
