This book distinguishes itself from other similar works in the following ways: a reflective approach to ethnicity, an inquiry of how anthropology engages with politics, and a critical view of borderland societies. In challenging the tendency in academia to highlight the performative aspect of ethnicity, the author calls for a balanced view of difference and sameness between ethnic minorities and the Han, or between “us” and “Others.” In developing a dialogue with political science, sociology and other disciplines, this work showcases a worthy effort to integrate bottom-up and top-down, and micro-and-macro approaches to analyzing local politics. Moreover, in engaging with scholars on borderlands and marginality, the author coins the ideas of convergence zone and strategic marginality to shed a new light on the permeability, transformativity and situationality of borders by demonstrating that “borderlandness” or marginality can also become an opportunity for locals to act as agents.

Tenzin Jinba is professor of anthropology and sociology at Lanzhou University, and fellow in the Agrarian Studies Program at Yale University.
