High Peaks Pure Earth has translated a song by Tibetan singer Gyaltsen called “Waiting with Hope”. Gyaltsen is a singer from Golog in Amdo and is good friends with the famous singer Sherten, also from Golog. Gyaltsen first gained prominence in a song dedicated to the Yushu earthquake alongside Sherten.
In 2012, Gyaltsen released an album of songs that also included the song dedicated to Yushu. Gyaltsen’s entire album has been online on YouTube since March 2012 and all ten songs can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEjiDA76qho “Waiting with Hope” is the first song on the album. The first two paragraphs talk about the Dalai Lama being in exile and the Panchen Lama’s “manifestation” refers to the 10th Panchen Lama (1938–1989). The Panchen Lamas are considered to be incarnations of Amitabha Buddha. The last two paragraphs refer to the Dalai Lama as the sun and the Panchen Lama as the moon which are commonly used metaphors in Tibetan poetry and song that also symbolise their relationship to one another.
